Commended in the Captured at Kew category

International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) 1919

This was the scene that greeted us as we entered the Waterlily House at Kew. The horticulturist was simply pruning the waterlilies, but his inadvertent classical pose and the colours and tonality of the tableau reminded me of a Pre-Raphaelite painting, such as John Everett Millais’s Ophelia, painted in 1852, the year in which the Waterlily House was completed (Tate Britain), or John William Waterhouse’s (now infamous) Hylas and the Nymphs (Manchester Art Gallery).
